Our Story

Helen, the founder and owner of Knit or Dye, is an indie dyer based in Island, Qld. As a trained marine biologist, Helen gains inspiration from the natural world, specifically animals, plants and landscapes native to Australia. Apart from dyeing yarn, Helen knits, crochets and spins, so knows the importance of good fibre. Her collection of hand dyed yarn is both beautiful, soft and practical, an often tricky combination!

Hello! Nice to see you here.

I’m Helen, and I love yarn.

I have always been ‘crafty’. As a child, I was shown by my parents that working with my hands is both important and a way to make a living. I was exposed to fibre crafts at a young age and my obsessive personality trapped me in a yarn-shaped rabbit hole that I couldn’t get out of (not that I wanted to!). That same obsessive personality made fibre a very important practice to keep my anxieties in check. I am a mother of two beautiful boys (4 and 1) who are the most perfect (non-yarn related) things I have ever made.

Knit or Dye dyes all our yarn in (very) small batches from our home base, Bribie Island, Qld, Australia. This makes every dye lot, and each individual skein special, a truly unique craft item to make a beautiful project with!

The environment is so important to us:

We are passionate about the environment and strive to make our environmental footprint as small as possible in all aspects our business, which uses recycled and compostable packaging and almost zero plastic. We hand skein the majority of our yarn from bulk cones to ensure quality and skips out on the vast amounts of plastic packaging used to transport pre-skeined yarn. All the bases we use are sourced as locally as possible, from sheep-friendly Australian farms.

We want to give our customers soft, beautiful yarn in inspired and interesting colours. Most of all, we want to help crafters have amazing experiences crafting, for a minimal environmental impact.
